Mountain Art Project Filzmoos

Art in Filzmoos and at the Alpenhof

The Mountain Art Project Filzmoos turns our little mountain village into a huge gallery every year. Painters, sculptors, and photographers from all over the world showcase their works in unique places – from rustic alpine huts to hotels and cozy restaurants. Filzmoos becomes a place where art and nature come together in a truly special way.

The best part: all exhibitions can be visited free of charge – and even better, you can combine some of them with a hike. This way, you get to experience art surrounded by mountains, fresh air, and an unforgettable atmosphere. And who knows – maybe you’ll discover your new favorite piece along the way.

It all started back in 2021 with 21 artists in 21 locations. Then came 22, 23, and so on. We can’t wait to see what 2050 will look like. ☺️

The festival is curated by John Wieser and organized by Filzmoos Tourismus. Together, they create an event that inspires both guests and artists year after year, turning Filzmoos into one big exhibition.

So go check out a few of the exhibitions – it’s truly something special, and there’s something for everyone.

Mountain Art Project 2025 - Anton Thurnberger

What's going on this year at our Alpenhof?

This year, we were delighted to welcome Anton Thurnberger to our Alpenhof. A master carpenter by trade, he creates his works in a very special way – using mainly botanical materials such as grasses, ferns, thistles, and ears of grain. These are pressed under high pressure, grinded or sanded down, and then pressed again… about 50 times in total until, voilà – a unique piece of art is finished.

With their earthy and natural tones, his works fit perfectly into our entrance area full of wood and stone, radiating a calming and grounding atmosphere.

What I personally find most fascinating is that this is art you can actually touch. The texture of all these layered materials feels amazing – and yes, there’s a little adrenaline involved too. Even though it’s allowed, it still feels pretty unusual to be able to feel a painting with your hands.

A big thank you to Mr. Thurnberger for his wonderful works and for exhibiting them here with us. Be sure to check out his website and photos – they’re fantastic. But honestly, nothing beats experiencing them live. So if you get the chance, don’t miss it!

Mountain art 2024 - colorful entrance area at the Alpenhof

In 2024, the Mountain Art Project Filzmoos was once again a very special experience at Hotel Alpenhof. Artist Elke Hubmann-Kniely delighted our guests with her colorful works, always carried by emotion and intuition.

For her, painting means pure joy: as soon as the paint tubes are opened, every mood transforms into a sense of elation – and that very feeling is passed on to those who view her art.

We were truly happy to showcase her works in our entrance area. The vibrant paintings were a real eye-catcher and often made our guests stop in their tracks – sometimes more than once, as so many hidden details could be discovered in each piece.

In 2023, as part of the Mountain Art Project Filzmoos, we were able to experience a very special exhibition in the garden of our Alpenhof. Salzburg-based photographer and “dream gardener” Norbert Kopf presented his impressive series “The Magical Garden”, showcasing works centered around gardens, blossoms, and the great mysteries of life. His images took our guests on a journey into a world of colors, shapes, and emotions – a place where nature and art merge in a truly unique way.

A heartfelt thank you to Norbert Kopf for this inspiring exhibition, it was great seeing these small and beautiful flowers in all their details. ✨

Mountain art 2022 - Zwei Künstler im Alpenhof Filzmoos

The Mountain Art Project Filzmoos brought not just one, but two extraordinary artists to our Alpenhof in 2022.

Australian artist Janet Knight enchanted everyone with her paintings. With great passion, she captures the essence of beauty and the emotions of the moment – whether it’s the stunning Filzmoos landscape or the very first encounter with an alpine cow.

At her side, Austrian artist Evi Schartner presented her expressive drawings. In addition to running her own studio, she also works on illustrations and children’s book stories. Her art has already received international recognition, including the Palm Art Award and the Purchase Prize of the Bankside Gallery in London.

Together, the two artists let art and nature meet in Filzmoos – transforming the Alpenhof’s entrance area into an inspiring exhibition space that lingered in our memories for a long time. ✨

Mountain Art 2021 - Anna-Lena Cäcilia im Alpenhof

In 2021, the Mountain Art Project Filzmoos was held for the very first time – and it was already a true highlight for us at Hotel Alpenhof. Austrian sculptor Anna-Lena Cäcilia presented her figurative sculptures, which impressively showcase the expressive potential of the human form.

Her works are created from a variety of materials, but the templates themselves are modeled in clay – allowing her to shape them directly with her hands. Combining both classical and contemporary techniques, she unites body, emotion, and identity into vibrant artworks that deeply moved us.

Our guests were fascinated by this unique exhibition in the Alpenhof garden. Fun fact: the setup and takedown of the exhibition turned out to be quite an adventure, as some of the pedestals and sculptures weighed up to 200 kg – definitely a challenge, especially for the rather petite artist herself.

We warmly thank Anna-Lena for all her effort and for this wonderful exhibition. ☺️
